Lord McNally is the current leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords and a former senior Downing Street advisor. In 1979, he was elected the Labour MP for Stockport South and crossed the floor in 1981 to join the newly formed Social Democratic Party (SDP). In the 1979 to 1983 Parliaments, he was a member of the Select Committee on Industry and Trade, and from 1981 to 1983 he served as the SDP spokesman on education. Lord McNally entered the Second Chamber of Parliament in 1995 and has been in office ever since. Leading up to the annual Liberal Democrat party conference, Tom McNally discussed with Weekly Zaman the coalition agreement, the recent UK riots and the challenges ahead for the ruling coalition government. McNally isset to deliver a speech on Turkey's economy and role within Europe at Weekly Zaman's Liberal Democrat fringe meeting during the annual party conference. Also to speak at the conference are Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Sir Graham Watson, Baroness Hussein-Ece and Turkish Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek. Today's Zaman and Weekly Zaman Editor-in-Chief Dr. Bülent Keneş will also be present contribute to the discussion of Turkey's booming economy and its role within Europe. McNally labelled Turkey as "one of the economic success stories" of our time and stressed the importance of Turkey's role in the region regarding the burgeoning Arab Spring nations.
