This past weekend NwC ran our Animal Tracking Clinic. On Saturday, the class discovered a deer carcass while following some wolf tracks. Upon further investigation, the class also identified a couple of sets of mountain lion tracks around the carcass too. After spending some time sorting out all the track evidence, Tom preformed a field necropsy on the dead deer. With some help from Adam and a retired horse veterinarian named Bill, Tom was able to remove the hide and help the class interpret the wound trauma (which is really only evident once the hide is removed). Tom explained how the observable evidence was consistent with a mountain lion kill. That night Adam put up a game camera to try and capture any animals that came back in on the kill that night. Here is a video of what the camera picked up.
